Bio
Alexis Phinney is a flutist based in Southeast Michigan who loves to perform and teach. She recently won 3rd Prize at the 2026 National Flute Association (NFA) Young Artist Competition, 2nd Prize in the 2025 NFA orchestral audition and masterclass competition, 1st Prize in the 2024 Wisconsin Flute Festival Competition, and was a finalist in the 2025 New York Flute Club Competition. Alexis has played a variety of orchestral repertoire and has contributed to five orchestral recordings, including Sila: The Breath of the World, by John Luther Adams, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Orchestral Performance.
Alexis served as the University of Michigan 2024-2025 flute studio Graduate Student Instructor, where she taught flute methods and private lessons. She also mentored young musicians through the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Youth Ensembles and enjoys maintaining her own studio.
She holds MM degrees in Flute Performance and Chamber Music from the University of Michigan, where she also earned a BM in Flute Performance and a BS in Pure Mathematics. She has studied with Amy Porter, Conor Nelson, Laura Boor, and Natalie Pagel, and has performed in masterclasses with esteemed flutists such as Gareth Davies, Zartouhi Dombourian-Eby, Michael Hasel, Amanda Blaikie, Patrick Williams, Brian Dunbar, Valerie Coleman, and Lina Andonovska. Alexis is ecstatic to teach and perform and is looking forward to many more musical experiences ahead of her.
